NZ trailblazer honoured in UKA woman who British media have described as one of the UK's most powerful women has been declared New Zealander of the Year in the United Kingdom.Prince Edward presented the award to Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas at a royal reception at the Dorchester Hotel. It is given every year in recognition of the contribution a New Zealand or British national makes in presenting a positive image of New Zealand in Britain. Jonas is the first woman head of Kings College, Cambridge and as a civic leader helped introduce London's controversial congestion charges. The packed ballroom was a celebration of New Zealand success - including academics, business people and city lawyers. And mention was made of two New Zealand artists making it big in the UK - pop musician David Bedingfield and singer Hayley Westenra. Bedingfield is currently recuperating in New Zealand from a car crash in Northland. Bedingfield was a nominee for the awards, along with Len Cook - once New Zealand chief statistician and now the UK's chief number cruncher. "I think all of us in the UK share this award," Jonas said. "I dedicate it to you because what we are actually doing is showcasing the best of New Zealand in the world's greatest city." Meanwhile, Prince Edward will get his next taste of kiwi culture when he visits the country next month.
